Wellbeing Campaigns, Events & Projects

Below are current and previous Peer2Pier campaigns and Wishing Well events. If you are interested in becoming involved or have an idea for a future campaign or event let us know!

The Untouchables - fighting retouching:saving real bodies
The Untouchables is a Wishing Well campaign run by Kerry Grainger, an MA Photography student at the University of Brighton. The campaign aims to create a photographic collection of real, un-retouched bodies to promote positive body image and fight back against the images of "beauty" which are portrayed by the media. Kerry is looking for models, so contact her to get involved!

The Freedom of Speech
The release of the film the King's Speech has put the issue of speech impairment in the public eye more than ever before. On Tuesday 7th February (Room D222, The Checkland building, Falmer Campus, 5-6pm) Matt Callard (University of Brighton student) will talk about how he is working to overcome his stammer along with Anne Blight who will talk about the work of local speech therapy course The Starfish Project. Snow Your Units
Do you know your units? If you drink alcohol then you’re drinking “units”, but you might not know how many there are in your favourite tipple. The “Snow Your Units” campaign is about knowing how many units are in drinks and what the recommended drinking levels are. You can also give your opinions about alcohol in Brighton and Hove by getting involved in the Big Alcohol Debate

Garden Parties
Peer2Pier volunteers were out enjoying the sun, and promoting safer drinking, at the S.U. garden parties in June. Our "Beer Goggles" assault course showed students just how they really look after a few too many drinks, and offered advice about how to keep safe when enjoying a drink in the sun.

Students with dependents' coffee morning
The coffee morning was suggested by the Wellbeing Convenor for students with dependents, as a solution to the issue that many students experience of feeling isolated from others at university. Volunteers and staff worked together to run a coffee morning at which students with dependents could meet each other, have a chat and bring children along too, as well as enjoy some yummy cakes!

The Art of Giving
The Art of Giving workshop was designed to give students feelings of happiness and wellbeing through the act of giving to others. The workshop provided time, space and materials for students to design and make cards for loved-ones. There was also a badge-making activity where students made a badge with positive words or images on and then exchanged these with others by placing them in the “Bucket of Love”. The Art of Giving was a Wishing Well project.

Street Angels
Peer2Pier volunteers braved the cold March nights to offer personal safety advice to students on their nights out. The Street Angels (complete with tutus, wings, pink wigs and wands) made sure that partying students got home safely with their friends and even provided flip-flops for people struggling to walk in their heels! The Street Angels project was put forward by our Women's Convenor, who worked with Peer2Pier volunteers and the Wellbeing team to bring the project to life.

Safer Students
Working in partnership with Susex Police and the Campus and Community Zone we delivered a safety campaign designed to keep students safe while they're out and about, at uni and at home. Some brave volunteers even dressed up in stripey burglar costumes to raise awareness of theft in libraries by putting "I could have nicked this" stickers on unattended valuables!

Valentine's week
P2P volunteers were spreading Valentine's love and promoting relaxation by offering free hand massages to lucky students who passed by!

Captain Hydration does end of semester stress
Captain Hydration and his super-hero friends took to the libraries and study areas to assist students in battling end of semester stress. The heroes gave out bottled water to combat headaches and boost concentration, as well as providing top tips on how to study effectively and who to contact if you need a bit of support.

I'm Marvin'
I’m Marvin’ was a food celebration event funded by the Wishing Well. Volunteers were raising awareness of the benefits of healthy eating through juicing demonstrations, and giving out free juice samples containing fruits and vegetables which increase energy and concentration levels. We also gave advice on how to shop for healthy foods on a tight student budget, with the winners of our “Guess the price of the basket” competition winning a juicer for themselves!

Captain Hydration does Freshers' week
Did you see a bunch of superheroes handing out water and some handy tips and ideas of how to survive Freshers’ week? If not you missed our fun Captain Hydration campaign that went on during Freshers’ week in the clubs and bars of Brighton.

Student Switch Off
The Student Switch Off campaign is an inter-hall energy saving competition. To encourage energy-conscious behaviour, the hall saving the most energy will be rewarded with a big party in the summer! Find out more here
