BRIGHTON TAEKWONDO SHINES AT NATIONAL COMPETITION
The University of Brighton Taekwondo club participated in the BSTF Taekwondo National, which was held by the University of Nottingham this year. The trip started off with a 3 hours train journey to Nottingham. Being the first student national competition for the club, we were all a bit nervous but also excited. The team arrived at Nottingham on the Friday evening preparing for the “Big event” on the next day. As one of the youngest sports clubs to hold the Panther logo, the Brighton taekwondo squad for this event only consisted of six individuals, including five fighters and a club organizer, Licoo Li. Nevertheless, with all the elite training prior the competition, the team was well prepared.
The Competition was held in the University of Nottingham sports hall. As we stepped into the venue, the intense competitive atmosphere was immediately apparent. The Brighton squad was surrounded by teams from Universities from all over the UK; many consisting of more than 20 athletes. The competition was professionally organized with full size rings and trained judges, accompanied by Olympic recognized score panels.
The day started off with the Poomse (Patterns) competition, which two of the Brighton squad black belts, Terence Yu and Danny Stalford, were entered. Unfortunately, Danny failed to make the second round and Terence finished 5th in his category. After the Poomse, the most exciting part of the competition kicked off – Kyorugi (sparring). This is the main body of the competition as well as being the most exhilarating
Red belt Kendrick Yuen demonstrated some well placed techniques in his rounds. Up against the UWE in his quarter finals match, he put up a strong fight but unfortunately fell short of the semi-finals.
Gareth Allan was up against the host, Nottingham University, in the first round. Showing outstanding performance, Gareth won the match only one and a half minutes into the first round by knocking out his opponent with a lethal turning kick to the head gaining the spectators attention. He was, however, matched up with a very experienced player in the semi-finals from Kingston University and missed out on the final. Gareth’s amazing performance gained himself a bronze in his category, also making him the star of the team.
The Third up was team captain, Terence Yu. Terence got through the quarter final by scoring 7-0 against Bristol by playing a simply fast attacking game and able to keep the points using the right strategy. He, however, lost the match against UWE in the semi-final, making him 3rd in his division.
Danny Stalford, matched against a very strong opponent from Leeds, managed to score some decisive points in the first round as well as showing good defense techniques, taking him through to semi-final. Danny’s semi final facing Cambridge was also intense. With only 10 seconds toward the end of the match and one point down, Danny drew his opponent into a spectacular jumping spinning kick to the head. The two points, however, did not register making Danny missed out on the final.
Lastly, Araz Viano whofought in the toughest division, -84kg Black belt, also got through to the semi final where he lost to Southampton and achieved a bronze.
Overall the Brighton Taekwondo Squad earned a very respectable 4 out of a possible 5 medals making the competition very successful. Club captain Terence Yu gave his thoughts on the competition by saying “I am very pleased with the overall performance of the team. It was a fantastic weekend in which everybody thoroughly enjoyed. We are looking forward to our next competition where we will have a larger team, greater experience and a higher performance”. Moreover, big credit is to be given to club organizer – Licoo Li who planned and organized all the travelling and accommodation plus assisting the team during the event.
