My name is Smart Caleb Vincent, a first year Mechanical Engineering student. I am running for School Academic Representative for School of Environment & Technology (SET). My aim is to negotiate, ensure and create a mutual platform where the needs of SET students’, my fellow Engineers (in the making) and other students of University of Brighton would be given special attention. I bring to this position wealth of experiences: currently I’m the Level One Mechanical Engineering Course Rep’, a member of Brighton Active Student Services and a Promoter of various Social Clubs.
The need for us to a have strong SET delegation in the University of Brighton Student Union cannot be over emphasised. I have been in touch with many students not just from my Faculty but across the University and we tend to have almost the same expectations from the SU i.e. “a conscious desire for an effective representation and good governance”. When I become your representative, I will ensure that the SU and Course Reps’ live up to the mandate of the students they are meant to represent. Also I would strive within the limits of my position to ensure your expectations are engaged in lectures, social events, placements and workshops. It is understandable that we are in a general placement period especially for second year students and I am not ignorant of the fact that students tend to be happy hence, their wallets are not affected. As your representative I would bargain for paid placements not just for the money but the best placement option for you.
Many students have pointed out to me some daunting issues affecting their studies such as workshop availability & timing and AUTOCAD software not being accessible in the library. As a course rep (in a micro level), I have campaigned for these issues to be given the needed attention, though there seems to be intermittent improvements. But becoming your school representative (in a macro level) projects me into the driver sit to accelerate the resolution of these issues. Thus, I’m highly optimistic to meeting with the relevant authorities to seek a new approach towards a lasting solution to these challenges and subsequent ones alike.
A colossal look into SET in terms of student representation shows that the school is a glass half empty than one half filled. The benchmark therefore remains the need for an absolute structuring and a complete revolution of students’ engagement/participation in the activities of UBSU but this is largely dependent on the calibre of people we choose to represent us, people who would not only attend meetings but are ready to go the extra mile, sacrificing more time and implementing meeting outcomes/consensus. This is why I’m running for this position. I also understand that the school (SET) is entitled to three sits in the SU, using this medium; I call on well meaning students to come and partner with me to add value to SET students’ experiences and the University of Brighton at large. To achieve this purpose you have to stand for elections or ensure that your mandates are secured by VOTING me via STUDENTCENTRAL on 15th to 19th March, 2010.
The winning formula is if you want me to win using the drop down menu beside my name and photo on the election page select #1 as your preference. However, if you have used this option already for any candidate running for the same position as me then select #2 as your preference. Remember your vote is your power, use it rightly!!!
