Hi my name is Kunal Sharma, I'm a final year business management and marketing student, and am running for the position of Student Union Vice President of Wellbeing. I am an active member in several societies, such as Tae Kwon Do, Drama and Extreme sports.
The reason that I want to run for the Vice president for Wellbeing is because University can be a very difficult transition, and it is important to have as much support possible to help cushion this. I for one struggled initially when I came to university to settle in, as the experience was overwhelming, but the support given through the student union helped me to overcome a lot of issues I had. Another reason that I want to run for Vice President of Well-being is because it is important for students to be able to voice their opinions, as it’s their university experience, and I just want to help out where possible to make it even better.
I believe that when representing students, it is important to always listen to their opinions and talk to them, because they know how they can make their experience better, also its important that all the students know they have somewhere they can come to, if they are having any problems or issues that are effecting them.
I also believe that students should be aware of all the issues that surround them at university such as Also there are key issues that are affecting students currently such as Brighton university trying to utilize better resources from Unisex to offer better services for all students in each campus through organisations such as the primary health trust, and the impact it would have on other groups and societies such as the LGBT, as well as the work being done by interfaith and promoting it within the student body of Brighton university.
In my personal opinion I think it’s crucial to have a close connection with the student body, because I want them to feel that they can come to me and put forth their ideas and any concerns that they are having. One way to help build stronger communication with the student body will be to allocate time for example 4 hours every Friday, where students know that I will be available, so that they can come to me, and discuss any issues that they are having or any ideas that they want to put forth. The reason for this will be so students feel relaxed and calm, and able to talk openly, where they might normally feel unable to do so. Also I really want to focus on the mental health and state of mind of students, especially during exam periods where stress levels increase. I want to achieve this by highlighting services that are readily available within the well being zone, and how it can benefit them.
In terms of the qualities that I have to aid with this role, I am very approachable and always eager to help out, wherever I can. Also am also very hard working and once I commit to a job or task; I see it through to the end, such as being active members of both the Universities Tae Kwon Do society and Drama society. Also after going through the stresses and pressures involved through academic and student life, I have a better understanding of the difficulties that can face all students, varying from a variety of backgrounds.
I strongly believe that the most important thing to remember, when supporting students is to make sure that every single student get the chance to have their say, because I know some students that believe that the student Union isn’t important to them and that it doesn’t affect them, but it does. Therefore I want all students to feel that there say is important, to make the student union run more beneficially for everyone.
In terms of experience that I feel can help with this role, I currently work in a pharmacy and have done so for several years. In my role there, I have always tried to be attentive to all patients, especially ones who are elderly or unwell, because there well being is very important in the fragile state that they are in.
One main aim if elected would be to increase the level of student participation in the Student Union, because currently only a small percentage of the overall student body are actively involved, and I hope to change that. One of the main roles involved in this position related to welfare such as health, also there are numerous societies operating within the university, however they don’t usually ‘mix’ together, therefore I want to hold more fundraising events, to encourage greater participation within the student body. Another point is that on a regular basis, I want to approach students and societies and ask them, if they feel I am catering for their Well-being, or any suggestions that they have, to improve their experience. By doing this, I hope to get more student involved in the student union, and help me to promote and create better ways to support everyone’s well-being.
Now you’ve heard from me, all you need to do now is come down to the Question time on the 2nd March 2010, listen to the speeches and between the 15th and 19th March place your vote, because the outcome of the Election is going to affect you. Vote Kunal Sharma
