In my campaign my main aim is to be as honest as I possibly can as I’m no different from any of you! I don’t have all the answers and am not going to tell you that I do but what I do have a brain full of ideas! I’m 21 years old, from Croydon and believe that university is so much more than your resulting degree grade. I see university as three years of living in a bubble of late nights, a once-in-a-lifetime close community and most importantly, a journey in finding out who you are inside. We have the rest of our lives to work and provide for families, so lets’ enjoy what we have now, before its’ gone!
The world inside my head:
Pebble Newspaper: Since VP Joel Andrews left the student union in December, I have taken responsibility for The Pebble and one of the main issues I have is that hardly any students are involved in its production, content and even readership. This is because of its formal, unappealing and outdated format. I want the pebble to turn into a magazine style newspaper. I want every single student to engage with something inside it and consider it a lay stone when finding out about anything student life related.
Since taking over, editors are being and will now always be trained professionally by The Argus newspaper; this is something that I set up so we do not have to continue using 3rd party designers. It has saved the union over £10,000 over the next year, and gives invaluable qualifications for students to take to the media industry. We are already making massive strides to creating an engaging, sexy and informative read by including art editors to ensure that EVERY aspect of this publication is as comprehensive and bespoke as possible. My aim is to get every student in all the schools contributing to the content, with stories, features, reviews, funny stuff and anything you all can think of to help make it an awesome publication. But we can’t stop at being just a newspaper!
Online: Print media is dying...we need to catch up. And then change the way students interact with their student unions forever.
I want fully interactive website that gets updated on a daily basis. I want it to be a space where local artists, writers, musicians and creative students can showcase their work and others can download it. I want an application in which students and the community alike can upload into an events diary so we are never out of touch of what’s going in and around Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings. I want there to be daily video uploads from students and weekly videos from union staff updating you about the Student Union activities. Have you ever gone to the student union to find that there is a meeting or no-one is in? I want a 9-5 live video stream broadcasted online so you know when we’re there. I want to create an iPhone application so student can find out all about what’s going on just by looking down at their iphones. I want ALL lectures to be turned into free Podcasts for students to download and use as revision tools. I want there to be Webcam/Skype style interactivity with Union staff and students in which students can change the face of the student union without leaving their homes. I want all of the sport results, fixtures and league tables to be at the touch of a button for all students. All of this will be viewed to the soundtrack of your local pebble student radio station.
This is going to take a lot of work from a business side... and is perfect for our business students as I want to give them freedom to market and gather connections through advertising and promotion projects and gather vital work experience whilst contributing to student life.
Community: Now I’m living in rented accommodation I feel that I can probably give something more back to the community. We already have student involvement within local action teams and student Rep teams, whereby students actively participate in the local area changes and help improve them. I think this is a great idea and will endeavour to grow and spread these schemes to a wider circle in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings. Some students however will not be as committed to changing their town as others, and this is fine, and it is to these students that I want to appeal to and instead of asking them to help change their towns; I simply want them to engage with their neighbours. Create a relationship with those that live either side of you.
I also want to help those that are left fortunate than ourselves in our communities by creating schemes such as ‘Give 2 Get in’. Free entry wristbands to nightclubs given by charity shops to students whom donate items to them.
I also want to address any housing issues students may come across by making the Union a tool student’s can use. Landlords are free to charge whatever they like for sub-standard living accommodation (you should see my gaff). I want to create a letting agents directory in which we submit the basic living requirements that students require, and challenge the agents to meet those needs. Should they not comply then they will be placed bottom of our recommended list. Students will also be given free rein to comment upon each letting agent so students are told by students just what it’s like to use that particular letting agent. We are paying the bills and therefore have the power, as students, to change things...
There’s a lot of competition this year for the Campus and Communications role, check us all out, but I know exactly how to go about what I’m claiming I can do and think it’s about time this university was taken into a new direction.
