► VPAA Diana Wong

SEX!!

Bet I’ve got your attention now haven’t I?!

My name is Diana and I’m currently a final year Biological Science student running up for VP Academic Affairs, and these are my reasons why YOU should place a 1 by Diana Wong during voting week on studentcentral from 15th to 19th March 2010!

I believe...
Education is a RIGHT not a privilege. Students cannot and will not be victims to the increasing fees we have to pay to study at university so we can obtain our degrees. Increasing fees will no doubt prevent even more students to enter higher education, and could possibly lead to students dropping out halfway through their course. We should not have to suffer. I will ensure that I will attend both local and national protests, meetings and campaigns regarding this issue and organise them in Brighton for students.

I believe...
You fail an exam because of a genuine illness or an unfortunate circumstance that couldn’t be avoided. Why have to retake them in August? Why not in May when exams are happening anyway? Retaking them in August means having to miss your graduation day with your friends, so when you DO graduate a year later, it’s without the friends you made over the three years at uni making it a miserable experience. In addition, I will urge the University for the Release of exam scripts and ensure decent feedback is given to all students across the University for All the Courses Brighton University offers.

I believe...
Better notification if a lecture is cancelled. Not every student lives across the road from university. Some students commute in from Eastbourne, Surrey and London amongst other places. Some students are parents. Some students actually attend the lectures.  If a lecture is cancelled, then the students concerned should be notified as soon as possible. I want to try and set up a SMS service so that even the cancellation of a 9am lecture is alerted as soon as possible.

I believe...
In a better and improved Course Rep System. Having been a course rep for the entirety of my time at Brighton University, I know what works and what doesn’t. I want every student to know who their course rep is, and ensure there’s a course rep for every single course no matter how big or small the course is.

I believe...
In all lectures being placed up on student central. Some students are international students where English is not their first language. Some students have dyslexia or a learning difficulty. Some students are just confused by what the lecturer is trying to explain. If a lecturer is not willing to slow down and explain key concepts of the course in detail for them, then surely they put their notes up on student central right? WRONG. We pay an extortionate amount in tuition fees each year. Surely accessing lecture notes after a lecture should be one of our basic rights?

I believe...
In students being able to match my face to my name. I don’t want to be just a name. I want to be a face you can put a name to. I will ensure that you as the students of the University of Brighton are fairly represented on all issues relating to academic affairs. I want to be able to be accessible to all students no matter what campus you’re on, the degree you’re studying for or if you’re a final year student or a fresher.

I believe...
My experience of being a course rep for the entirety of my course plus being an elected officer in the student’s union and being involved in the NUS Women’s Committee has provided me with the grounding and background I need to prepare me for this role. I have come prepared, I know how the system works and I know I can do it. Place a 1 by Diana Wong for VP Academic Affairs!

Education is a RIGHT...NOT a privilege.
The real question now is... do you believe in me?
