My name is Sam Mallender, I am a third year student studying Social Science on Falmer campus and I am standing for Student Union President. I feel that I am the best person to move the Union into the new structure and along side this, make the Students Union relevant to as many more students as possible.
Why Me? – Experience, Ideas, Fresh Approach
I believe that by drawing on my unique experiences over my time here at university, as the current Women’s Representative and member of the Student Union Council, a member of frontline staff at the Student Union Office at Falmer, 2 years experience as a Course Rep in the School Of Applied Social Science and my work for UNISEX as Chlamydia Campaign Co-ordinator, I have in depth knowledge and understanding on what a variety of students require from our Students Union and the ability to bring about this much needed change. My ideas are based on interactions with a wide range of students with varying interests, which means better representation. Also, untypically for our Students Union, my academic background is in Sociology and Psychology which means the way I approach the job will be different and fresh, which I strongly believe is important to ensure the new structure that will be put in place next year is the best it can be.
Big Changes Happening in Your Union
Next year the Students Union is changing how it operates and splitting our polices into clear zones, the Academic Zone, Campus and Community Zone, Activities and Events Zone and Wellbeing Zone. I feel it is crucially important that the upcoming President uses the new structure to create the most inclusive and relevant Students Union experience for all our members, we must continue to appeal to those we currently do, but branch out to those we may not. I believe this is achievable by creating a stronger, better trained and supported team of officers and working within each of the four zones to offer something from the Union to every student. Having been a member of the Executive for a year as Women’s Rep I am aware that many of our elected officers are unsure how to best carry out their roles for the students they represent, and this is something I’d change. The next year is going to be such an exciting year for all of us and if elected I will ensure the change over is as smooth as possible.
Every Campus Matters
Here at Brighton University we are multi campus, this is both our greatest asset and our greatest problem as a Students Union. This fact means no other University is as diverse as ours, it also means each campus has its own unique atmosphere and students tell me they feel proud to be a student at their campus for this reason. However the physical distance between our campuses can make it feel like we attend separate Universities, and if elected as President I believe I can begin the process of uniting the campuses. Having to spoken to students across campuses I know how important the little things can be to you, from more vegetarian options in your café, to a zebra crossing at Varley, so I will endeavour to always make sure the all important little things are fixed. Also, with the removal of the Eastbourne and Outreach sabbatical officer I feel it is imperative to have a President committed to visiting and improving the Student Unions relationship with these campuses. Elect me and I promise to keep your campus high in my priorities.
More Diverse Entertainment
The Students Union already hosts the popular Wednesday nights, and as a regular at these I think they are fantastic. However I feel it is important that the Students Union also puts on another week night to cater for those students whose music tastes differ from what is provided already. This will include more students in our entertainments, but also if we provide more club nights, rather than external entertainment companies profiting off hard up students, we can put the money back into the Students Union to spend on our students, a better deal all round! I also believe we need weekend events, not only for those who still want to party (affordably) at the weekend, but for students who do placement courses and cannot enjoy our weekday nights out. I will make sure we have something to offer to everyone and you have the most fun at University possible!
Fighting the Cuts
As much as University should be about having as much fun as possible, the Students Union does much more than just throw awesome events, so I believe we must have a President that also focuses on the slightly more behind the scene areas. Regardless of whether the impending closure of UNISEX goes ahead, I believe it is extremely important to ensure, as President, my students have access to free condoms, pregnancy tests, Chlamydia tests and sexual health, drug and alcohol advice, so what ever happens I will explore all the avenues to making this happen. Along with this, the University Plans to close Phoenix nursery in July, which I oppose as I feel it goes against our equality, diversity, and widening participation polices. We must ask ourselves the question: “First UNISEX, then Phoenix, what next?”. With budget cuts planned for the Student Union and University alike over the next year, as President I feel the most important thing I can do is to fight any cuts, and if that fails work with the team to give the students the best outcome possible.
