Societies Federation (Soc Fed)

What is Societies Federation?

Societies Federation supports society activities at the Students' Union and is led by the Societies Federation Committee, made up of 5 elected students and 1 student chairperson.

The Committee is advised and supported by Katie Price (BSU Vice President Activities and Events), Julie Beasley (Activities and Events Zone Manager) and Stella Sims (Societies Assistant).

Societies Federation ratifies new societies and decides on funding applications from groups.

Societies Federation Committee

The Societies Federation Committee changes every year, and is nominated at the Societies AGM at the beginning of the academic year. The Societies Federation Committee is formed of 5 students - any student who is a member of a society can be on the committee!

The following students were successfully elected to the Soc Fed Committee for 2011-2012:

Nyika Suttie (Feminist Society)
Mercer Gilmartin (Waves Cheerleaders)
Sian Hodgkiss (BIOSOC/First Aid Society)
Fredrika Uppman (Brighton Food Co-op)
Kate Merkulova (Investment and Trading Society)

Joel Samuels (BURST) was successfully elected to the position of Soc Fed Chair.

What does the Committee do?

The Soc Fed Committee meets approximately once a month, with the purpose of meeting with societies planning events and who need funding. The societies present their bids for funding, discuss them with the Committee, and the Committee has the final decision about what funding is offered.

Being on the Committee is a great way to meet other students, enable them to take part in activities and also crucially shape the way BSU spends its money!

How can I apply for funding?

You need to fill out an application for funding form, available from the links to the right. You will need to print the form, fill it out and submit to an SU reception, along with any other supplementary information that will help the Committee understand your application. You will also need to give a breakdown of your proposed budget for the event, a simple Excel spreadsheet is available to help you calculate this if you click here.

Emails are sent out about Soc Fed Steering Committee meetings a few weeks before the meeting, and notification posters will be displayed in SU reception offices. You will normally need to submit paperwork approximately a week before the meeting. You will then need to attend the meeting to explain your application to the Committee.
