Student societies bring together like-minded students through shared interests - they are a great way to meet new people, participate in activities and gain new skills outside of the academic environment. What societies exist is up to you – they are run by students, for students. If you think there’s something missing and would like to start your own society, then follow the links to the right for more information on starting your own group.
There are lots of benefits to organising yourself into a group and making yourselves official. Once you are ‘ratified’ by the Students’ Union you can have access to union facilities and room bookings, and can also apply to the student-led Societies Federation Committee for funding outings, trips and much more. The Societies Federation budget offers financial assistance for society activities, and applications for funding are considered at regular meetings by a committee of students (the Societies Federation Steering Committee) elected at the Societies AGM at the start of each academic year.
Societies are funded by the Societies Federation budget, and supported by SU officers and staff: Katie Price, S.U.V.P Activities & Events; Julie Beasley, Membership Activities Co-ordinator, and Societies Assistant, Stella Sims. Your nearest S.U site administrator can also offer help and guidance.
For a list of current societies or any other information on starting your own society follow the links on this page or contact the Societies Office via societies@brighton.ac.uk or telephone 01273 643599.
The Societies Federation Committee changes every year, and is nominated at the Societies AGM at the beginning of the academic year. The Societies Federation Committee is formed of 5 students - any student who is a member of a society can be on the committee! We have a Societies Federation Committee meeting approximately once a month. Click on the Societies Federation Committee tab to the right for more info and email societies@brighton.ac.uk to find out when the next meeting will be held.
