The UniCard is a new smart card for use by all students. It will be introduced from the start of the 2009/2010 academic year.
The UniCard, which will be free of charge, will replace the existing student enrolment and library card. Initially, the UniCard will entitle students to borrow books and other resources from university libraries and media centres. In the (near) future, the university plans to extend the entitlements of the UniCard to other services and resources. These may include catering, sport and recreation facilities and out of hours access to buildings.
New students
The majority of cards will be produced in advance, in preparation for the next academic year 2009/2010. New students will be encouraged to upload passport style photographs of themselves so that the cards can be produced.
New students will be able to collect their UniCards from their schools during registration week providing they have uploaded their photographs and completed their online enrolment.
There will be facilities during registration to produce UniCards for students who have not already provided photographs or enrolled online, but these students are likely to experience delays during the enrolment session.
You can find out more about uploading the information required for your Unicard by logging onto: https://studentcentral.brighton.ac.uk/
Returning students
Returning students will be able to collect their cards mid–November 2009. During the transition period, the old style library cards will still work in university libraries and media centres.
What has happened to the old UBSU card?
Due to the introduction of the University’s internal UniCard, which gives you access to University services and shows you are voting member of UBSU, it was decided that the old UBSU card was no longer providing good value to our members. The NUS Extra Card provides hundreds of discounts and gives you recognised student ID status across the UK and for an extra pound you can include the ISIC (International Student Identity Card) which gives you over 40,000 discounts across the world! The ISIC card normally cost £9 so this is a great deal!
