NUS Conference Delegates
The National Union of Students is the national representative body of students in the UK with over 3 million members. NUS is a federal organisation, what this means is that individual students unions like UBSU decide to join NUS each year and pay an affiliation fee to support the work of the national union.
NUS like students’ unions across the UK is a democratic organisation. Individual students’ unions encourage students to stand for election as NUS Conference Delegates. These delegates represent their colleges and can propose and vote on important policies at NUS annual conference. These policies really do have an effect on ordinary students as they shape the work of the NUS for the coming year, this can include policies on student finance, liberation campaigns (such as LGBT, BME, Women’s etc). As well as setting policy NUS also has elected officers. There are full time and part time officers, any student can stand for election. At the national conference usually held in the second term of the year in Blackpool conference holds elections for these positions. It is your delegates who vote at these elections, and the range of candidates is often very diverse and political. Bearing in mind the delegates from your SU help to choose who will be running NUS and representing almost all the students in the UK it is important that you either stand as an NUS Conference delegate or vote for candidates you want to represent you.

NUS conference is responsible for deciding the policies and priorities of NUS for the year ahead. It is also where the National leadership are elected. This is the hotbed of student politics and activism.
Brighton SU is entitled to send 5 elected delegates to NUS conference. It is their responsibility to ensure the interests of Brighton students are represented when decisions about the leadership and policy of NUS are made.
If you believe in the power of collective action, the need for debate and discussion and a student movement informed by all students, stand for election as a NUS conference delegate.
