Hiya, my name is Sam and I am the President of Brighton Students’ Union. President of Brighton SU is a full time post which is elected every year by students, I oversee the entire Students Union and am responsible for the Democracy and Representation Zone, there are 4 other zones of the Students Union and below the Vice Presidents will explain their own zones.

A Student’s Union is independent of the University and exists to represent you to the University and to improve your student experience. We are not for profit, so any money you spend with us goes straight back into the Students Union to continue to improve your time here. As with most things in life, the more you put in, the more you get out, so the more you get involved in Brighton SU the better your student experience will be.

Your job as students is to hold me to account. You, as a collective, are my boss. I will keep you regularly updated with what I am up to on www.ubsu.net, on Facebook and on Twitter. I will also do regular campus visits so I can talk to you face to face. So please find out what I’m doing, and let me know if you agree, disagree or think I should be doing something completely different. Email me, phone me, or come bang on my office door in Cockcroft, make sure I am doing what you want me to do. Get involved in Brighton SU, join a team or society, become a course rep, write for the paper, there are so many ways to get involved. Standing for election is also a fantastic way to get involved, we have a by-election coming up in November to fill all the places remaining in the Student’s Union, and then the main election in March. Being an elected officer is a great way to shape the SU in the way you feel it should be. We are your SU, so make it what you want it to be.

I am a Brighton graduate from the School of Environment and Technology, with a degree in  Geography. I started at Brighton in 2006 having taken a gap year after 6th form. I spent my year, in my home town of Crawley, learning to be a youth worker and getting the qualifications needed. During this year I also went travelling around Europe and spent much of my free time in the mountains around the UK.

I came to Brighton because I wanted to be able to carry on the youth work I started in my gap year and the city was both within distance to do that and had always been and favourite place of mine. When I started at Uni I tried to get involved in as much as possible; I started playing hockey and getting involved in the RAG Society. Through this I got involved in the SU as the Ethical and Environmental Officer in my second year and Community Action officer in my third year. This lead to me running for VP Wellbeing in my final year and being elected to the position I now hold.

The position of VP Wellbeing is a full time post elected by the students to make changes and be your voice on all issues relating to student wellbeing. This is also a new position this year and shows a new direction for Brighton SU. The Vice President Wellbeing takes charge of the Wellbeing Zone, which is designed to make student involvement at all levels much easier.

For example in order to get involved look out for open meetings at the beginning of term to elect 27 convenors in a variety of positions, 3 of each post located in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings:

  • Women
  • Welfare (Health and Housing)
  • Students with Dependants
  • Ethnic Minorities
  • LGBT
  • Interfaith
  • Ethical and Environmental
  • Disability
  • First year Students

However this is not the only way to get involved also look out for Student Experience Forums and Wellbeing Committee Meetings where you can come along and have your say on what you want changed. Also look out for the different full time and part time officers on campus and feel free to stop them for a chat about what ever you want!!!
