University of Brighton Students Union new Constitution, adopted in August 2010, means that Brighton Students' Union has a governance structure in line with the requirements of the Charities Act 2006 and the Charity Commission.
My name is Martin Clayton and I am the Campus & Community sabbatical for the year 2011/2012. This area of work focuses on the student experience within the community and how we interact with local stakeholders and residents as well as creating a sense of identity and community for students on each campus. One of our biggest strengths is that we encompass the whole of East Sussex with our students but it can also sometimes be our downfall when trying to create unity so it is a great testament to this Union that resources are being put into minimising those effects. I am also currently a third year Business Management undergraduate and hope to balance the agendas of our students with the rules and regulations outlined by the Charities Commission to remain both financially solvent and in line with UK legislation. I look forward to the challenge of turning our Students' Union into a sector leader and look forward to delivering better services for our students.
Whilst a student at Sussex University I got involved with the Students' Union there, initially through running a society. In my final year I was elected to be the Activities Sabbatical Officer for 2005/6 which I really enjoyed. When my year in office finished I got a permanent job in the Students' Union's Activities Centre and currently work there full-time helping student societies develop. I'm also involved in our research and marketing. I started a part-time MBA at Brighton in 2009 and have found being a part-time, postgraduate, mature(ish) student very different to being an 18 year old undergraduate! It is really interesting to see how Brighton SU differs from Sussex's Students' Union and I look forward to helping it develop. I'm particularly interested in how Brighton SU communicates with its members.
Kirstin Papworth - Student Trustee
I am in my final year at Brighton studying English Literature and Language. I was a course representative in my first year at university and wanted to continue to be involved in representing students while at university which led me to the post of student trustee for the union. I have also studied at the University of Glasgow, which has many different aspects to Brighton, so I feel like this gives me a wider experience to draw upon when looking at student issues. I am delighted to be on the board of trustees and looking forward to supporting the union and adding a different perspective towards its development.
Eddie Thomas - External Trustee
Following my higher education, I joined the United States Embassy in 1986. After working at the embassy for just over 10 years, I then spent a gap year travelling throughout East Asia, Australasia and North America, which was a very enriching experience. After returning, I worked at Brunel University students’ union where my role developed considerably over the period. After leaving Brunel I took up the role of GP Practice Manager at a large GP practice in Kentish Town, north London. In April 2007, I moved to be Practice Manager at a GP surgery in Uckfield, East Sussex. I successfully completed my Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development Professional Development Scheme at Buckinghamshire Business School.
I believe strongly in the role students’ unions play in providing support and empowerment to all students. I highly value the work of the officers and staff, and the excellent development opportunities offered through volunteering. I am familiar with committee structures and the role of trustees and am delighted to have the opportunity to offer my services.

Brighton SU Trustee Board
Student, Officer and External trustees recruited to the Board work to ensure a sound, healthy and legally compliant organisation thereby empowering our elected Council of students to concentrate on campaigning and representing students with confidence and integrity. The new constitution states that the Trustees shall be made up of the following persons: not more than 5 Officer Trustees, not more than 4 Student Trustees not more than 4 External Trustees
Who sits on the trustee board?
Ed Bending - Officer Trustee
My name is Ed Bending and I am Vice President Wellbeing for the coming year. Due to this position, I also sit on the Board of Trustees. My background is very much centred around all aspects of well being from ethical and environmental issues through to the playing of sport and the community in which we live. As part of this board I want to ensure that the student voice is still loud and clear at the highest level of Student Union management, whilst also ensuring that the Union fulfills its requirements as a registered charity. I also see this position as an opportunity to ensure that the financial situation of the Union remains stable, protecting all the services that are offered to the members. I have experience of serving on another trustee board fro the South East Duke of Edinburgh Award and I wish to bring this knowledge to the new board for Brighton Students' Union.
