Elections
Stand up and be counted

Twice a year Brighton SU holds elections to enable students to democratically, fairly and openly choose students to represent them. These elections are held in the second term when the main Union General Election happens and in the first term when the Union holds its by-elections.

Elections enable you to chose who you want to represent you on a full time basis, these officers are known as sabbaticals. Sabbaticals are students at the University who (like all officers) are elected for a year ,but undertake their duties full time and receive payment for doing so. Supporting the sabbaticals are  the part-time officers who volunteer their time as officers and still study at the University. Any student enrolled on a University of Brighton Course can stand for election. All you need to do is fill out a nomination form available online or from all SU campus offices.

You don’t need any experience to stand and get elected to an officer position, just a willingness to improve the lot of students and campaign to get elected.

SU elections ensure that the student body get the representatives they want; to enable this we use a special system of voting called proportional representation, this ensures that every vote counts. The SU uses a system of proportional representation called Single Transferable Voting (STV) you can read more about STV at:http://www.electoralreform.org.uk/votingsystems/stvi.htm

Once officers are elected they enter a ‘term of office’ during this term they work to achieve their manifesto commitments, these are the issues and policies that outline the action they promised to undertake when standing for election.

Officers also must sit on a variety of committees both within the Union and the University. It is on these Union committees that the officers can make decisions on how the Union is run, or at University Committees seek to ensure the University acts in the best interests of the students
One thing that is certain is that standing for office and getting elected give students incredibly valuable life skills which are highly regarded by employers. Officers receive comprehensive training and support to help them be effective in their work.
