National Student Survey 2011

The NSS gives final year undergraduate students' a chance to have their say about their time at University. We use this information to make changes for the better. Data and comments received are used by the Students’ Union and the University to improve the student experience. Within the Students’ Union we’ve used this data to support Course Reps in making changes on their course. Specifically we are looking at ways to improve communication between staff and students, enhancing the role of technology in providing a rich and rewarding learning environment, improving the quality of resources available to support students learning, from reading lists being accurate and available at a time where they are useful to ensuring libraries carry the books you need in the numbers you need them. In the past we have used it to inform our understanding off students’ experiences of assessment (which we know very few people really enjoy) and lobbied successfully for the quicker return of feedback on assessed work.

As a thank you to students for completing the survey, the University will make a donation of 50p for every completed survey to the Students' Union to be used for projects directly aimed at improving the student experience. This could mean up to £2,000 for Students' Union projects. Students can choose which project to donate to by logging onto studentcentral and voting. The Students' Union projects are:

i) The Students' Union Excellence Award
is a student led project to recognise course reps and the University staff who inspire, challenge and support students and help them get the most of their time here. By supporting the project you help say thank you to the people who make this University great.

ii) The Wishing Well
supports student led campaigns that will improve the lives of University of Brighton students. The pot of money allows students to apply for small project funds of up to £250. Successful bids also get the support of the Student Unions' Wellbeing team to bring the project to life. By supporting the project you add more to the pot and help fund more student led campaigns.

iii) Parklife
is sport for all and sport for fun. Parklife is open to all students at the University of Brighton and takes place across all major sites. Activities range from long running leagues or one off competitions. The intention is to make taking part in sport fun, easy and free where possible. By supporting this project you help provide access to recreational sport.

iv) Community Reps
is a scheme to provide support and information to students living in the private rented sector while also building a better sense of ownership and involvement in the areas we live in. By supporting this project you help students thrive in the rented housing sector.

Course reps whose courses reach 75% and over of students completing of the National Student Survey will be entered for a prize draw to win one of three VIP graduation packages at either the summer graduation 2011 or winter graduation 2012. The package includes:
• Free tickets for the graduate and two guests
• Free robing courtesy of Wippell of Exeter
• A photography package courtesy of Tempest Photography
• Lunch for the graduate and two guests at Al Duomos which includes a glass of bubbly, 3 course set menu and liqueur to finish
